If you are a visitor to the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort and Spa, around 30 minutes from the city of Kota Kinabalu you will be close to one of the most beautifully crafted golf clubs in Malaysia.

The Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club is a par 72, 18 hole championship golf set between the Mekong and Tambalang rivers. Its unique location between the rivers means the course enjoys both the eye-catching tropical jungles and the wetlands.

Designer Ted Parslow has created a golf course that is in total harmony with its surroundings skilfully utilizing the array of natural terrain available to him.

With the backdrop ever changing between the tropical jungles and views out over the South China Sea you are never going to get bored of the surroundings and even less so of the golf course.

The second hole is a fine example of the designers use of the natural habitat in creating challenging yet beautiful holes.

A par four that is just short of 400 yards, the golfer is faced with a difficult drive that must find the fairway between the bunker right and the trees left, play left and you will be left with a longer, but more straightforward approach into a narrow green that is heavily guarded with various bunkers and water right and short.

You will be tested to the extreme when you arrive on the ninth tee. Handicap index one, this 419 yard par four tests every sinew of your body. The fairway is flanked by wetlands and dense jungle to the left and protected by a 50 metre bunker on the right. If you have found the fairway from the tee you are faced with a long iron or fairway wood for your second. The green protected, by deep bunkers short, is a challenge in itself with huge undulations making par seem almost impossible.

A delightful par 3, the eleventh tee is surrounded by the South China Sea and requires a well struck shot to carry the mouth of the Tambalang River. The green is protected further by bunkers, but it is the backdrop of this hole that will really stick in the memory with Mount Kinabalu in the distance.

With all the natural landscape the wildlife that you can encounter at Dalit Bay is vast, with native birds nesting in the wetlands to otters. It so nice to see a golf course design that enhances the natural habitats of native creatures.

The clubhouse at Dalit Bay is superb offering the highest quality service. A large terrace is available for those that wish to enjoy a refereshment after their round and take in the stunning views.

A large pro shop and an aquatic practice facility is on hand for those that wish to improve or warm up before their rounds couple this with two practice greens the facilities here are superb.

Beautiful course along beach, river, pond. Not crowded because of weekday, but no caddie even I asked before. I want to play again.
