Kota Kinabalu is a perfect Golfing destination and especially suitable for golfing couples where one partner does not play golf as there are plenty of other things to do which means that you do not have to plan everything around the golf course. There are some wonderful beaches in Kota Kinabalu and some extraordinary wildlife and the Orangutan Sanctuary is a place you must visit. If you are into snorkelling and diving as well as golf then head for Sapi Island which offers the clearest waters in the area. But enough about other attractions – you came to this website to find about about the golfing options in Kota Kinabalu and there are plenty of golf courses within easy reach of the city.
Sutera Harbour Resort Golf & Country Club
Within easy reach of the city is the Graham Marsh designed course at the Sutera Harbour Golf & Country Club. This 27-hole layout is probably the best course in the area and the three different nines called the Garden, Lake and the Heritage (Ocean) courses, each offer very different golfing challenges and will be enjoyed by golfers of all standards. A very extensive clubhouse offers some top class facilities with several restaurants and a Cigar Lounge. A well-stocked pro-shop has all the latest golfing gear and if you want to refine your game before taking to the golf course then there is a driving range where you play into the lake rather than the grass. Kota Kinabalu is renowned for its amazing sunsets and after your round you will be able to sip a cold beer as you discuss your round and watch the sun go down.
Located around 15 minutes from the city, this courses is the oldest golf course in Sabah and was opened in 1976. Over the past 20 years it has hosted many famous tournaments and it has the reputation of being one of the toughest golf courses in Sabah. You will find plenty of challenges as you make your way round including the undulating fairways and many large water hazards. The courses was built by Robert Muir Grave on a site that was once part rubber estate and secondary jungle.
Dalit Bay Golf Club & Spa
This golf course is adjacent to Shangril La's Rasa Ria resort, about 40 minutes outside Kota Kinabalu, and is my favourite golf courses in Kota Kinabalu. A very picturesque courses which meanders through the virgin jungles beside the Tambalang and Mengkabong rivers with Mt Kinabalu as a backdrop. Plnety of water on this course so if you don’t like water carries then you may be in for a long day. Excellent clubhouse with a water driving range and The Golfer's Terrace restaurant and a bar. Your non-golfing partner can enjoy the Spa which is also part of the clubhouse complex.
Nexus Resort Karambunai Golf Course
This golf courses once won Best Golf Course in East Malaysia and enjoys a stunning location with the jungle-clad hills on one side and sea on the other so it if often at the mercy of the prevailing winds. The course was designed by Ronald Freme and you will need to pick your way carefully around the course between the strategically-placed bunkers and water hazards as you attempt to reach the immaculate greens.
A bit further out of town - this golf course is around 70 kms South of Kota Kinabalu close to the South China Sea. Designed by Jack Nicklaus it has, as you would expect, plenty of bunkers protecting the greens which have the reputation of being lightening quick.
