The Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, is probably the shining light of the Dubai golf scene. The Majlis Course is the flagship course at the Emirates Golf Club and is the host of the European Tour Dubai Desert Classic tournament.

The course, built in and around the dunes right on the edge of Dubai city, was built under the instruction of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the donor of the land who required that the natural desert fauna was maintained in its natural state.

American designer Karl Litten was the mastermind behind the design of the original layout. It was Litten that created the first grass course in the Middle East. The course quickly gained recognition as a top venue for golf, with the Pan Arab tournament taking place just a month after the opening of the course. In 1989 the international recognition of the course was noted, as the European Tour staged Dubai Desert Classic, which has become one of the biggest tournaments on the European Tour calendar.

In designing the course, Litten made the most of the abundant flora and fauna and weaved the fairways through the natural landscape beautifully. The inclusion of both fresh and saltwater lakes and the inclusion of the Majlis building between the 8th and 9th holes make this course one of the most recognizable and revered golf courses in the World.

Some of the most memorable holes on the course have to be the 8th and 9th, both great par fours in their own right.

The 8th is arguably the hardest hole on the course and requires a long, accurate drive to leave an uphill approach into a very small severely undulating green where a 3 putt is a definite possibility.

The 9th also requires a driver from the tee and an approach to the right side of the green will leave a relatively easy chip or putt. Anything left edge of the green will quickly gather down and head to a watery grave, a great way to finish the front 9.

But my favourite hole has to be the 18th, which as you know has witnessed many a great finish to a Dubai Desert Classic tournament. An almost 90º dogleg will tempt you to take the corner on from the tee, even though the green is still likely to be out of reach for many golfers. The key to this hole has to be the second shot, work out your distances and leave yourself your favorite distance for your third. Make sure you get over the water and leave yourself a real chance to finish in style.

If you are planning a golf holiday in Dubai, then you must consider The Majlis course as one of your venues. Having said that the equally stunning Faldo course at the Emirates Golf Club should also be a consideration making the Emirates Golf Club an absolute must as a Dubai Golf holiday tee time.

Great course - challenging with lovely views

This course was a delight - challenging but a joy to play. I needed all my shots to get round in a net par score. Lots of good tee shots required but there is always an opportunity to make a recovery without excessive punishment and dropped shots. I’d definitely play this course again.

For a championship course, it wasn't as good as I want expecting.

The facilities are amazing. The greens were slower than the greens I play on in Australia. It was still good to be able to play on a course that I normally see only on TV.

Great Experience

Playing the Emirates (Majlis) was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I could play with my son as part of his graduation gift. The course was in decent condition and had some maintenance during play.
