Holes 18 | Par 72 | Length 6302 m / 6892 y | Type Parkland | Architect Mr. Wax Wexler

One of the first international standard courses in Hua Hin, Palm Hills Golf Club remains a firm favourite and although a bit short it’s an excellent layout with fast greens which are tricky to read.  Good clubhouse with excellent bar and restaurant.

Hua Hin suffers from a water shortage and Palm Hills Golf Club seems to be affected more than most but in normal conditions the generous fairways are lush and flat but the well positioned water hazards make things a little more challenging.

Some say the course has a links feel to it but the tropical plants and trees which surround the course rather dispel that notion.  The back nine which is more undulating offers good views over the Gulf of Thailand.

Fairly gentle start with a downhill dogleg par 4 with large bunker blocking the tiger line but if you play to the left of the fairway you have a good line into the green which has bunkers either side.  The 2nd is the first of the par 5’s and is an intimidating tee shot with water both sides of the fairway and narrow approach to the greens with bunkers either side and behind the green.  The 3rd is a short par 3 which is pretty easy if you can avoid the large bunker protecting the right side of the green. The 4th is a short dogleg par 4 with a narrow landing area between the large fairway bunker and the trees on the left of the fairway.  The 5th is a short but tough par 4 with water along the left and a tricky approach with water a bunker and a ditch protecting the left side of the green.  The 8th is an interesting par 3 which plays slightly uphill across a water hazard and then it’s on to the 9th, the most difficult hole on the course with a tree blocking the left side of the fairway and a narrow green sloping quite sharply from right to left.

The back nine at Palm Hills Golf Club starts with some of the best holes on the course and includes the 11th, a long uphill par-3 and the prevailing wind can often make club selection difficult.  The 12th is a challenging dogleg par 5 with water on the right off the tee and a very narrow landing area for your 2nd.  The 14th is a testing par-4 dogleg with water down the left and across the fairway and if you try to play safe the bunkers are positioned to trap you.  Maybe an iron off the tee is advisable.  A bit of respite on the par 3 15th which is pretty straightforward and the par 5 16th is a scoring opportunity if you can keep to the left of the fairway and avoid the trees which can block your approach.

A really nice resort course which is still in excellent condition and well worth playing on any golf holiday in Hua Hin and the green fees here are a bit cheaper than some of its more illustrious neighbours.

Nice layout, slow greens, some caddies need training

Reviewed by ; on
This is a decent holiday golf destination, pleasant to play with some interesting holes. The greens were playing very slow (6.7?) and some of them were dry and patchy. Two of the three bunkers I visited had rock-hard, compacted sand. Improving the greens and bunkers would lift the experience at Palm Hills to a different level. Our round was very quick - 3h20min for a two-ball, despite a four-ball ahead of us. One of our caddies was excellent, the other one quite hopeless- she counted the scores of most holes wrong, didn't really communicate in English or pay attention to what club she was asked to bring. Apparently she was a relatively recent joiner, but she seemed disengaged and disinterested throughout the round which is not something you can just put down to lack of training. To the credit of the club, we had the caddiemaster and a senior caddie come talk to us after the round to apologize for the situation.

Lack of service and poor management of tee time

Reviewed by ; on
The experience was heavily pulled down by the staff. First of the staff at the front desk is not very helpful. They don’t smile much, and then they nag at you. I was there 20 minutes before my tee-time, but the lady couldn’t manage to find my name although I told her multiple times, and when she finally found it they wouldn’t give me time for driving range, so I had to go out playing all cold. They only take card in the pro shop, and not at the different cafes/halfway houses, and they can’t open a tab for later payment. The caddy was very quick to say the ball was lost a lot of times, so she could tell me to buy more. More than often I would find the ball by myself, and it was not even remotely close to out of bounds or gone. The course itself is fine, some places very soggy in the morning because of bad drainage On the website I booked the tee time through it says they advice to tip 200 THB to the caddy, which is totally fine, although the caddy insisted she had to be paid 400THB at least because of Thailand law?????? Because it took the front desk so long to find my name and booking the caddy would pick up my ball and just continue to the next hole without asking me. I find that very rude and not in okay, when it is at their fault. I have played both with the 500THB bag and the 1000THB and honestly there is no real difference. I would NOT recommend palm hills. I’d rather go another place where the guests are treated better.
