Black Mountain Golf Club Course Description

The Black Mountain Golf Club has a course that’s been designed with professional players in mind, but amateurs can play here too. The surroundings are stunning with black mountains, natural creeks and contours carved by nature; it’s a beautiful area for a really challenging game of golf.  It certianly makes our list of Best Golf Courses in Asia.

The fairways favour a short drive, but watch out for the blind holes and dog-legs if you’re too cautious. There are large greens protected by water and some beautifully designed bunkers.

A pretty tough start to your round at Black Mountain Golf Club and you are usually playing into the wind but then its downhill to a big but undulating green.  The next hole is a classic risk and reward par 5 and you may be tempted to go for the green in two but it is very well protected by a rock-lined creek. The 3rd is very straightforward par 3 but the approach to the 4th green is fraught with danger as you try and negotiate you way onto the island green.  The uphill par 4, 5th is not too bad as long as you avoid the fairway bunker and remember to take an extra club for your approach. The tee shot on the 6th is quite easy but then you need to decide whether to go over the water to the green or play safe which leaves an awkward shot to a sloping green.  A tough tee shot on the 7th as you have to carry over a lake – you can take the safer route to the left but this then leave a long shot into the green.  The 8th is a beautiful and challenging par 3 with a long and undulating green with a large bunker protecting the left side.  The front nine ends with a tough par 4 with a difficult approach to a green protected by water and sand to one side and a swale to the other.

Your back nine at Black Mountain Golf Club starts with a dogleg par 4 and you need to decide how much to cut off with your tee shot – good birdie chance if you can get in the right position.  The 11th is a fantastic and intimidating par 3 onto an island green – no room for error here. The 12th plays longer than it looks and you need to take an extra club for your approach to avoid the deep bunker protecting the green.  The 13th is one of the best birdie opportunities on the course providing you can avoid the water hazard about 60 yards short of the green.  The 14th is a very challenging par 3 played over a large lake to a green protected by large bunkers.  The 15th is a potential card wrecker with a creek running all along the left side – the second shot is particularly challenging. The 16th is a shortish dogleg par 4 and the 17th is another classic risk and reward hole and long hitters can go for the green but this demands a long carry over the creek.  A stiff finishing hole and you will be happy to escape with a par as the green is surrounded by deep bunkers.

The clubhouse is superb with stunning views of the course while you taste the well-cooked and well-prepared cuisine. There’s a pro shop that’s wells stocked with a wide variety of products. The green fees are higher than other clubs, but justifiably so, as the Black Mountain experience will stay long in the memory.  If you would like to stay overnight here then you can find more information here.

Fantastic course but so slow

Reviewed by ; on
Cant fault the course. 5 star all the way from clubhouse to condiriin of course. Its also a challenging course with some great holes. Easy to see why they have held so many top competitions. Only fault is that it was so slow. We waited on EVERY shot! If you are paying top dollar this should not be the case.

Lives up to its reputation

Not much to add to the plaudits heaped on this course. Apparently named 59th best course in the world by some organisation or other and I believe it. Only reservation is pace of play, where we had to wait on every hole after the first couple of opening holes.

An absolute must...

I’ve been lucky to play some fine courses in Thailand, this is right up there at the top. Beautiful setting and some challenging holes. Greens in excellent condition, however a bit tough for mid-handicapper like me. Great caddy, next time I’ll walk and not take the cart. Nice bar afterwards, great locker room facilities. It’s not cheap, however worth the money. I’m coming back in August for another round at reduced green fee rates.

Everything perfect but gets slow during high season

Reviewed by ; on
The is one of the best courses in Thailand and probably the very best. The course is in superb condition and the courses is extremely well managed . The course will test every aspect of your game but to really enjoy it you need to select the tee box appropriate to your skill level. It gets very busy during the high season so a five hour round is the norm.
