Bangkok Golf Club is one of the closest courses to the city and usually takes about 30 minutes. Unfortunately it was badly damaged during the flooding in 2011 and as a result lost many of its mature trees and all of the greens had to be re-laid. Although it’s quite a short course but there are plenty of challenges to keep most golfers happy. The course is under new management so the service and maintenance have greatly improved.
This is not a long golf course and measures only 6,800 yards from the back tees but this does not mean that this course is a walk in the park as there are numerous hazards waiting to entrap you should you lose your concentration.
It may seem obvious but it’s especially true here and if you want to score well then you need to avoid the bunkers and numerous water hazards especially at the very cleverly designed par-3’s. Our particular favourite is the 11th which features an island green surrounded not only by the water but by a huge bunker. The 9th hole is a zigzag dog-leg par-5 that was once voted as one of the top 500 holes in the world by one leading golf magazine.
The front nine is pretty straightforward and many of the holes are quite similar as they criss-cross the course. The back nine is much more interesting with some excellent and picturesque holes involving plenty of water hazards and dog-legs. The 13th is rated the most difficult hole on the course as it winds its way around the water hazard abnd you have to poick your spot carefully. The 15th is a drivable par 4 but you have to take on the out of bounds area if you are to make the green and you can only attept it midweek when the course is less crowded. The 16th is another hole which you will remember as a lone palm tree stands just in front of the green blocking your route to the flag. The 17th used to feature two greens, one of which was bordered by a waterfall but this was put out of commission by the floods and will probable not be used again. The greens are not too difficult but are very true and quick for Thailand greens.
The club house at Bangkok Golf Club includes all of the usual amenities including traditional Thai massage and restaurants which offer Japanese and western food and if you want to stay outside the city the course offers simple accommodation. The course is also floodlit which is ideal for those who are able to tee off late in the day or play after work.
