It might lie just east of Bangkok but tee it up at Ballyshear Golf Links and there’s a whole world of golf coming your way.

Gil Hanse, one of the biggest names in golf course design, designed Ballyshear as a homage to America’s The Lido Golf Club, which closed during World War II and has since acquired the status of a golfing Camelot among those who love great courses.

Why? Because The Lido was designed by two architectural greats of its own era; C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor. They based each of its 18 holes on a landmark hole somewhere else in golf’s universe. Now Hanse has repeated the trick in south Thailand.

North Berwick’s Redan hole, for example, with its fiendishly tilted green designed to repel all tee shots, is replicated in Ballyshear’s 16th. The well-guarded Eden Hole at St Andrews shows up in the 3rd, while the green-bisecting gully that characterizes so-called “Biarritz holes” (named after the French course on which the feature first appeared) is incorporated in the 8th. Not everyone will welcome the Alps layout made famous by the 17th at Prestwick, calling as it does for a blind approach shot, but it’s immortalized once more in Ballyshear’s 10th.

And so it goes on, the challenge never more daunting than at the 606-yard 4th, where two fairways sit amid water and sandy waste. You can play safe to the larger fairway or trust your club and aim at the smaller one to shorten the hole considerably.

For all that these are proven hole layouts, the course is a bold step and a world away from most Thai courses. Angular greens and bunkers and the vast splashes of sand give Ballyshear an unmissable ‘throwback’ look.

By contrast, the understated clubhouse is a modern design and will eventually be joined by a hotel and state-of-the-art practice area.

Worst value for money in thailand not worth it

Arrived and it was like a school drop off caddies everywhere got told to tuck in my shirt 5 seconds from getting out of the car. Check in is clunky and the club houses look like a local football club nothing special about it. Got spoken to aggressively while walking into the change rooms about checking in (already had) starting area is just a carpark out back first 9 holes done in a modest 1 hour 40 min back 9 3 hours stop start every hole and no marshal in site . I have played a lot of golf courses in thailand and this is the worst value for money by a mile the place is 4 years old so relatively new bit it has been poorly executed for the price the greens are nice caddies ok but its a dust bowl with no shade structures in site spend your money and time at other courses you will be able to play and enjoy more golf

Terrific course on the outskirts of Bangkok

Course was in excellent condition. Wide fairways countered by stern greens made it a stiff test of golf. The caddy was very knowledgeable. Pace of play was excellent as there was a very limited number of people on the course at that time. The steady breeze and some tightly tucked pins made this course challenging but enjoyable.

Need to take note of lines off the tee. Caddys not great on telling you where to hit it. Drove into a few bunkers.

Ballyshear is close to my favourite Bangkok golf course, second only to Nikanti

Awesome links style golf course. The layout is excellent and the greens are just superb. Best greens of any course I have played in Bangkok (I have now played >10). The amenities at Ballyshear are not as good as Nikanti (which are next-level), but as I didn't spend anytim in the clubhouse I didn't care. Super friendly and helpful course staff. Amazing experience overall. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
