Mandalay will never win any competitions for the most beautiful city. Myanmar's second city is a comparatively fresh development that King Mindon established as his royal capital at the foot of Mandalay Hill in 1857. The hill, its pagoda-studded slopes, still stretches across the town. But in WWII, Mandalay was bombed flat and the palace, along with much else, vanished. The palace was reconstructed in the 1990s, and since then Mandalay has undergone a haphazard building boom that has never been about esthetics. An ever-increasing amount of motorcycles and vehicles are also clogging the highways, making a smoggy town sometimes.
But if all the honking can be shut out, Mandalay has his own charm. There are magnificent market and many monasteries.
The biggest town in Myanmar (formerly Burma) is Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon). An exotic mix of British colonial architecture, contemporary high-rises, and golden Buddhist pagodas including the famous Pagoda of Shwedagon.
