Luang Prabang Golf club is located some 10 minutes from the city centre in one of the most stunning naturally beautiful locations in the world. It lies within a UNESCO word heritage site and home to wonderful waterfalls and elephant sanctuaries.

The championship golf course is set to the superb backdrop of the Mekong River and has an abundance of stunning mountain views and vistas over the UNESCO world heritage town.

Designers and constructors of Luang Prabang were determined to ensure that they maintained an eco-friendly policy when constructing the golf course and the way that they have gone about maintaining the natural contouring and native flora and fauna add to the experience.

The course is not a challenging walk, although it is undulating and moves through various elevations.  Designer Tea Hwa has been very clever in the use of man-made obstacles to provide golfers with an aesthetically pleasing yet challenging golf course with the addition of bunkers and water hazards throughout the layout.

Holes are varied and present a variety of challenges for the golfer.

Fairways are generous, with the landing areas being accessible, whilst the rough is forgiving paving the way for golfers to return a good score on this course.

Play well and you will be rewarded, whilst erratic shots will be punished as you find the forests from the tees.

But the charm of this hidden gem is without doubt the intimacy you feel on each hole. Due to the gentle undulations and the expanse of the area, you hardly see another hole when you are striding down the fairways. It is this unusual feature that allows you to really get lost in your game and take in the stunning views.

As you meander through the forests and rolling hills you make your way closer to the south bank of the Mekong River. Although water hazards and of course the immense Mekong River are apparent on 9 of the 18 holes they only really come into play on just 5 holes with the par 3 17th being the most spectacular playing right along the banks of the mighty Mekong.

The 18th is a tough finish to what is an enchanting golf course. Played up hill towards the clubhouse the hole is a test of both strength and accuracy.

Luang Prabang golf course offers a well-appointed pro shop, club house with a restaurant that serves traditional Lao cuisine to a 5-star standard. Golfers can also enjoy a cold drink and relax in the calming and tranquil atmosphere of the clubhouse and reflect on the outstanding beauty and golf course they have just witnessed.

Luang Prabang Golf Club

Exotic location for golf - with some rough edges

Reviewed by ; on
I collect golf courses, e.g. I like to play at least one round in every country I visit. Laos is not on the map for golf facilities, but when I found there is a course in Luang Prabang, I had to try it. ( thanks, Golfsavers). The course is about 15 minutes out of town, along the Mekong river, although most of the course in within the hills and forests just outside a river, so it plays at mountain course. I did not have high expectations, but the fairways were in decent shape and so were the greens. The facilities are spartan, and temporary, as the main golf club facility is closed due to mudslide which damaged it. As of December 2018, there really is no lockers, restaurant or other facilities, everything is set up in construction trailers. I played in the morning and the mist and occasional Lao-style utility building around the course poking out of mist and forest made it nice and mysterious. The course is LOONG. Blue tees are over 8,000 yards, ever white tees were long and challenging to get GIR on par 4 holes. There are not too many hazards and challenges on the fairways, so the course if for people who can drive a mile. Rest of us mortals will struggle. Last three holes open views of the river and mountains and reward broader views. Try it, if you are in LP, but it is not probably worth detour. Also not sure what is the ability to rent clubs or shoes there ( I carry my own)
