Golf holidays in Vientiane

Thank to the advancements in technology and increased number of flights around the world, it appears nowhere is off limits for a golf holiday.  However, there are still many places which have been left largely untouched and one of those is Vientiane.

Vientiane is the capital city of Laos and despite being close to the border with Thailand, this region of the world does not receive anywhere close to the number of tourists as their neighbours.  The great thing about being so close to the border with Thailand is you can make the most of your time in this region of Asia.

Why not book a golf tour which encompasses both Vientiane and Thailand and create the dream golf package?  Continue reading to find out more about Vientiane.

Golf Holiday in Vientiane - Geography and Travel

Vientiane is the largest city in Laos and lies on the banks of the Mekong River in the north-east of the country.  The city is the administrative and economic hub of the country which may lead you into thinking it will be very hectic.  However, Vientiane is a very laid-back place and due to its relatively small size, you can reach most attractions on foot.

The estimated population of Vientiane is 760,000 and this is fewer people than many other capital cities in Asia.

The city is noted for its many canals and you will notice several houses built on stilts.  The Mekong River is very important to the people of Vientiane and is used to transport goods between Thailand and Laos.

Getting to Vientiane to enjoy a golf package is very simple thanks to the Wattay Airport, which is only 4 kilometres from the city.  The number of flights to Vientiane is increasing all the time and you can book direct flights from Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, Chiang Mai, Singapore and Seoul to name but a few.

So, you could book a great Vientiane golf tour which encompasses one or more of these exciting destinations.

Golf Tours in Vientiane - Best Time to Travel

Vientiane has a distinct wet and dry season thanks to the tropical savanna climate.  When booking a golf package in Vientiane you are advised to aim between November and February.  This is when the temperature feels cooler but remains at a warm 28 to 30 degrees and the rainfall is low.

April is considered the start of the wet season but you can still enjoy a golf holiday at this time of year, without being disrupted in the same way you could between May and September.  The months between May and September see the most rainfall, with August being the month to avoid.

Things to do Away from the Golf Courses in Vientiane

When booking a golf package in Vientiane, you must save some time to see the delights of the region away from the golf course.

Buddha Park is arguably Vientiane’s most famous attraction.  Here you will find over 200 religious statues and sculptures, all of which are designed and decorated differently.  The 40-metre-high reclining Buddha image is one of the main features and you can spend hours wandering around the park taking photos.

The most sacred monument in the whole of Laos can be found in Vientiane.  The Great Stupa dates back to the 16th century and is a golden temple complex with a 150 ft tall central stupa.  It’s very imposing and can be visited all year round.

As with many south-east Asian cities, one of the draws of Vientiane away from the golf course is the night market.  This sprawling array of stalls is a great place to purchase a vast array of items including souvenirs, clothes, electronics, accessories, and paintings.

Finally, if you would like to find out more about Laos and its history during your golf holiday in Vientiane, head to the National Museum.  Here you will find exhibits, photos and artefacts detailing the history of the region and country.
