Golf is big in Japan and you only have to travel for a short time in the county before you will see large driving ranges and expansive golf courses.  For those who are arriving in Japan via Tokyo, it is only a short trip to the eastern outskirts of the city before you reach Chiba Prefecture.

Here you will find a wide range of things to visit including temples, beaches and theme parks but one of the biggest draws to this region of Japan is golf.  One of the best golf courses in Chiba is Kyo Country Club and this opened for play in 1990.

Kyo Country Club is an 18-hole, par-72 golf course with a choice of four tee boxes on each hole.  Which tee box you use will have an impact on the length of the course, with the longest distance being 6,595 yards from the championship tees.  However, as far as championship tees go, this is not a great distance and will be manageable for many golfers.

Despite being quite short in length, Kyo Country Club more than makes up for it in strategy and this has been designed as a strategic golf course.  The course is quite hilly throughout and you will find many mounds on the fairways.  The landing areas for tee shots on the fairway are often narrow and accuracy from the tee is required to avoid landing in the rough or a hazard.

Club selection also plays a vital role in a round at Kyo Country Club and judging the distance to each landing area is key.  Some of the greens are large and very undulating.  You can get the ball on the green in regulation at Kyo Country Club but if you are a long way from the hole, do not expect to get the ball down in one putt.  To avoid the dreaded three-putt, you will need to land the ball accurately on the green and avoid long putts.

The par-4 9th hole is arguably one of the best at Kyo Country Club and dogleg right which is protected by a lake on the right side of the fairway.  The hole only plays to 371 yards from the back tee, so is short for a par-4 and provides a good birdie opportunity.  However, there is a pond in-front of the green and if the pin position is located near the front, this can come into play making the approach tricky.

Additional facilities at Kyo Country Club include a clubhouse complete with pro shop, restaurant and locker rooms.  There are caddies and golf carts available plus a putting green which is useful before taking on some of the tough greens on the golf course.

Reasonable Course

Its quite a short course so longer hitters will find it quite easy. The carts so not have any SAT NAV or scorecard systems so first time players without a caddie will struggle to negotiate the course. The fairways are quite undulating and on some holes they have built large mounds. The driving range is quite a long way away and you need to buy coins in the pro shop. Planes fly over all the time and get quite low and noisy.
