Red Mountain Golf Club in Phuket will never be a true championship course but if you can afford it this is a sensational experience and one of the best courses in Thailand. It's not easy but the wonderful views alone make this worth playing.
As you stand in the clubhouse overlooking the course it’s hard to believe that they could possibly have built a course in amongst all those red hills and jungle. What is equally amazing is this is the first course that was designed by John Morrow – I doubt if he will ever better this.
The course winds its way between the hills that inspired its name and is dotted with lakes which are a reminder of its former life as a tin mining area. There are often long stretches between each hole making a buggy essential as even they struggle to get up some of the hills – walking this course would be impossible which is why it will never host a major championship.
The jungle lines most of the fairways so any wayward shots are severely punished and on many holes it’s advisable to keep your driver in the bag and use something that will keep you on the fairway.
So many great holes it’s difficult to mention them all. On the front 9 the 3rd which is a short par 3 to a green protected by a rocky outcrop is memorable and the 6th, the most difficult hole on the course, with danger everywhere. The finishing hole on the front nine as you drive towards the club house from an elevated tee but get out of position here and the green is blocked out.
The hole everyone talks about is the par 3 17th as you tee off from a very elevated tee some 70-80 metres high through the tree canopy to the green below. The finishing hole is a spectacular downhill par 5 but it requires a long an accurate drive if you want to finish with a par or better.
Excellent clubhouse facilities. If you would like to stay overnight here then you can find more information here.
