Holes 18 | Par 72 | Length 6144 m / 6719 y | Type Resort | Architect Paul Jansen

Laguna Golf Phuket has been totally remodelled and re-designed and recently re-opened to very favourable reviews.  Although not long the strategically placed bunkers and water hazards and the newly shaped greens will provide a challenge for all golfers.

They have reversed the nines so the opening hole is now a medium length par 4 which is all about the tee shot with water reachable off the tee and coming into play again as you approach the green.  Then it’s on to a very pretty par 3 with water all along the right side but with a generous bail-out area to the left.  The 4th hole is a classic “Risk & Reward” hole and you need to decide how much of the water hazard to take on and the more you play safe then the more difficult your second shot becomes. Then it’s on to a very pretty par 3 with water off the tee but at least you can enjoy the natural wetlands – club selection is critical and if you miscue then you are likely to end up in the large bunker.  The 5th hole on Laguna Phuket Golf Club offers two routes to the green and if you decide to take the shorter option you can get stuck behind a large tree – with a bunker in front of the green and water behind the approach is quite daunting.  The next hole which is an uphill par-4 features no less than five bunkers including one large one guarding the right side of the green.  The 7th is the shortest par 5 on the course and offers a great scoring opportunity if you can avoid the water.  The short par- 8th is one of the most visually attractive holes on the course but the two-tier green requires an accurate tee shot to avoid the dreaded three putt.  The finishing hole on the front nine throws everything at you with water, trees, bunkers and uneven lies all and you need to play carefully to get correctly positioned for your approach.

A dangerous start to the back nine with a short Par 4 with undulating fairway and trees partially blocking the landing area which is also made smaller by the large fairway bunker. With water behind the green club careful club selection for your approach is essential.  The Par 5 11th is a great golf hole and if you can carry the fairway bunker then you have a chance of getting up in two – if you play safe then the route to the green is partially blocked and a bogey beckons.  The 12th is a short par 3 with trees lining the fairway and framing the green but keep away from the deep bunkers that surround the green.  The 13th has water all the way down the left hand side and you need to flirt with it to get the best view of the two tier green – at least there are no bunkers on this hole.  The 14th is a long uphill par 5 and you either need to carry the fairway bunker or play close to the water to get positioned for your second shot – if you decide to keep away from the water then the trees can come into play.  The 15th is one of the best par 4s on the course and you need to be accurate off the tee to reach the elevated fairway – better to over club for your approach as two huge bunkers guard the front of the green.  The 16th is a long downhill par 3 with water encroaching on the right side of the heavily contoured green.  The 17th is a slight dogleg with bunkers in the middle of the fairway – if you are not long enough to carry them then you may need to play close to the water hazard to the left of the fairway – the green is again heavily contoured.  The final hole is also the longest par 4 on the course which can be considerably shortened if you take the tiger line but OB is waiting for the slightly pulled tee shot.

The new Laguna Phuket Golf Club is a great improvement over its predecessor.  Previously all of the greens were very flat but this has changed quite dramatically and most of the greens are heavily shaped making putting quite a challenge.  Some of the fairways have bene widened but with the cleverly placed bunkers and bumps and hollows this course places a premium on careful and thoughtful course management and club selection.

The Laguna Phuket Golf Club offers superb facilities, with a well-stocked shop and a friendly and relaxed approach from staff. The lockers contain high quality sumptuous towels giving the visitor a 5 star experience. There’s a 4 hour spa and massage treatment on site, so you and your partner can indulge together once you’ve finished playing. When that’s over, make your way to the restaurant for a drink and some excellent cuisine.

Disappointing

Reviewed by ; on
Transfer got lost, so arrived late and had to rush to first tee unprepared with one minute to spare. Pace slow, service poor. Facilities and condition excellent. Very disappointed with the day. Would not recommend unless in a group with someone who’s played it already.

Good flat golf course with no views on the sea. Excellent restaurant.

Golf course in good conditions. Greens a bit slow. Caddies very bad ( they very often did not see the balls and were never quick to help finding them; they were not concerned).

There’s better in Phuket for the money

The course is quite well maintained although it’s apparent that they run it as a resort course, which is very busy don’t really think they consider the fact that people are paying green fees more in line with the top courses in the area but the course in my opinion doesn’t compare. I was also disappointed that they put a beginner with us which as nice a person as they were should not of been playing this course. It just caused a very slow round.

Great course, poor caddie

Reviewed by ; on
Really enjoyed playing the course. Would have liked slightly quicker greens but overall in good condition. My caddie was unfortunately poor and clearly tired during the round. Walking off leaving me carrying clubs, standing over 150m away on some tee shots to avoid moving too far from the last green and generally being pretty miserable. Enjoyed the company of a nice Swedish guy which helped.

Round spoilt by beginner

Reviewed by ; on
We were asked to play with another person which was no problem at all as it’s totally normal as we all know. While the person was really lovely she had only been playing since April. I find it quite ridiculous that someone who is not a competent golfer is allowed to play on what is possibly considered by some as one of the premium courses in Phuket (incidentally Not me!)
