Blue Canyon Country Club Canyon course is the only true championship course in Phuket and probably the toughest with narrow fairways and lightning fast greens.  They have recently allowed buggies onto the course although they have not yet completed the construction of cart paths so you have to use existing roads and sometimes drive along the edge of the rough. Blue Canyon Country Club - Canyon Course Description

The Blue Canyon Golf course winds its way through a former rubber plantation interspersed with lakes left by the abandoned tin mine and after a fairly easy start you are faced with a long par 3 which will have you reaching for your driver if the pin is at the back.  This is followed by a very long par 4 with a strategically placed tree blocking your shot into the green – unless you are a very good golfer this hole is best played as a par-5.   The uphill par-4 5th is a particularly dangerous hole which requires a very accurate drive if you are to avoid trouble and have a chance of reaching the two-tier green.  The 6th is a great driving hole but if you are a very long hitter then you may need to keep your driver in the bag as there is a pond waiting to catch the very long drive.  Your second is slightly uphill with a water carry and two bunkers lying in wait for any pulled shots – if you can find the right position on the fairway you have a relatively straightforward shot to the green.  Then after a welcome stop at the drinks hut it’s onto the par-3 7th which is downhill to a very fast green sloping left to right and a huge pot bunker guarding the right side of the green.  The 8th is a fairly straightforward par-4 with an uphill tee shot to quite a narrow landing area between two bunkers on the left and the rubber trees on the right.  The green slopes from back to front and is well-guarded by several bunkers.  The final hole on the front nine is a real birdie chance for the long hitters but most of us will have to play up for our second and then it’s a shot across water to a raised green and providing you can stay on the fairway this is a great scoring opportunity.

If you are going to post a score on the Blue Canyon Golf course then you need to do it on the front nine as the back nine and in particular the stretch of holes from 11 thru 14 are very challenging.

The 10th is a dogleg with a line of bunkers protecting the tiger line – go anywhere left on this hole and you are in double bogey territory – if you keep out a trouble then it’s a pretty easy hole.  The 11th is a long and difficult par 5 with trouble everywhere and you will be happy to walk off with a bogey here and the 12th involves a long approach to the green over water.  As you arrive on the 13th tee a plaque tells you that it is here where Tiger drove the green. If you’re easily intimidated then perhaps you shouldn’t look at the plaque. What the plaque does not tell you is that a member recently holed out in one - a feat unlikely to be repeated even by Tiger. The canyon is probably home to many daring shots, with a graveyard of golf balls, each with their own story to tell.

The 14th is one of the prettiest and scary par-3’s to be found anywhere and requires a shot of around 160 yards from an elevated tee box to an island green – no room for error here – you are either on the green or in the water.  Then it’s another challenging par 5 with a tricky second shot over water to a narrow landing area guarded by two bunkers.   You have a bit of a respite on the easy par-4 16th before the long par 3 17th which was once described by Gary Player as the “Best par-3 he had ever seen” which is almost impossible if it’s a back pin.

Blue Canyon Golf Club used to be the premier club in Asia and the new owners have vowed to return it to its former glory so this great course can only get better.  If you would like to stay overnight here then you can find more information here.

Perfect to go during off season

Course is amazing. I want to come back. Caddies though are not too good esp if they don't speak English. Then there is a compulsory "tip" after what is charged by the club = US$20 for bad service...

Avoid it’s worse than I thought

My buddy in BKK warned me... I was keen to return to Canyon after 10 years. Really disappointing how terrible the course conditions are. Asking top dollars for a course in ruined is a rip off. I can’t say in a nicer way... It was more contrasting after we played Laguna and Red Mountain. Even the clubhouse is in need of a total renovation. We had a 1st taste at the so called driving range... more like a potato field. Cow grass and sand if you don’t use the mats. Then the starter said the group in front is slow and we could swap with the flight behind hence wait 2 hours for next tee off! Rather than putting us in front, it took 13 holes until they jump us in front! We could have drank a coffee between each shot... Entire course is brown burned grass, soil is like cement (hurt my elbow so much the ground is rock hard). The turf is invaded by wild grass, all the tee boxes are with wild grass and slanted. Greens are packed with sand (caddy had to brush for every putt) and are also invaded by wild grass or no grass at all! The caddies although very good, you could sense the pride had lost its heydays. We were hoping to close our rounds on a high but instead in was the most disappointing round. I suggest to refuse to send your customers there, it will give a bad review on your services. We opted to change from Loch Palm since they started to renovate their greens. Maybe playing Laguna or Red Mountain twice would have been a better choice... Forget Blue Canyon!

We really enjoyed playing at Blue Canyon canyon course.

Challenging and enjoyable layout with caddies that were friendly and helpful. . Course was a little patchy possibly due to the lack of rain, however, the greens were in good condition. Particularly enjoyed the canyon hole with a drive over a gorge and the follow up par 3 to an island green from an elevated tee.

Great Disappointment

Reviewed by ; on
It’s a shame for the once so popular and well maintained and acclaimed golf course to see in what lousy condition it is now. Tee boxes are sand dunes alike, fairways are hard and badly looked after and the greens need urgent cutting and some rolling done. The clubhouse as are the various kiosks are also in a disappointing condition. I wonder how long the management can still attract golfers at these exaggerated green fees. There are better choices in Phuket but this course has lost all its magic from the past. Will never go again there!
