Designed in 1995, by American Richard Bigler, Tagaytay Highlands International Golf Club, is a unique golf course, located in the Tagaytay region of the Philippines.  The club is located 75 kilometres away from the capital city, Manila and overlooks Taal Lake and volcano.  The drive from Manila takes about 1 hour 30 minutes but is very straight forward and upon arrival, there is a 3 kilometre private road, leading up to the golf club.  If arriving by ground transport seems a little too mundane, there is also a heliport available.

There are actually two golf courses available at Tagaytay Highlands International Golf Club, the Midlands Course, which can be found here (add link if you like) and the Highland Course.  The Highland Course is a very scenic mountain course and as one would anticipate from a course designed on mountainous terrain, there are plenty of changes in elevation.  In fact, some of the changes of elevation can be quite extreme and there are also plenty of blind shots to deal with during a round.

The Highland Course is an 18 hole, par-70 course, with a maximum length of 6,119 yards.  There is a choice of four tee boxes to play from, including Red, White, Blue and Gold.  The front nine holes, start across a ridge of land, with the volcano on one side and a drop, down to the lake, on the other side.  The third and fourth holes feature a drop in elevation of some 400 feet, with one being a par-4, which has a blind tee shot and the other a long par-5.

The majority of the fairways on the opening nine holes have plenty of trouble on each side, so anything but accuracy off the tee will be punished.  Having completed the front nine, a Swiss cable car takes players to the tenth tee, in order to commence the back nine.  The back nine features more of the same, with tight fairways and changes in elevation throughout.  For those who are new to Highlands International Golf Club, this course will be a real test but having played it once, ball placement will become much better and lower scores can be achieved.

With a club house, driving range and pro-shop, in addition to tee houses, a children’s playground and mini golf, Highlands International Golf Club is a good destination for the whole family.  There is also deluxe accommodation available on site, making Highlands International Golf Club a great place to spend a golfing weekend.
