Burma may not be the first place you think of when booking a golf holiday but you will be pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the golf courses.  Mandalay is the second largest city in Burma and the former royal capital.  It is located in the north of the country and has its own international airport.

Located just an hour away from the airport you will find Myotha National, a new golf course which opened towards the end of 2018.  The 18-hole par 72 golf course has been designed by Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt and in the words of Curley, “Part of a new, massive industrial park complex on the outskirts of Mandalay, this core, championship course sprawls over a wonderfully natural site of nice elevation changes, deep arroyos and distinct native vegetation”.

“The course features a display of wide Zoysia fairways and rugged natural features that create optional angles of attack as they blend seamlessly into the outside edges”.

Perhaps the first distinctive feature of Myotha National is the length of the course and it plays to a staggering 8,000 yards from the back tees.  As you would expect from a golf course which plays to such a long distance, it is tough but is not only the best golf course in Mandalay, it is already competing for the crown of best golf course in South East Asia.

If you are put off by the daunting distance, don’t be as Myotha National has a choice of tee positions and the course is very enjoyable from the shorter tees.  You do not need a long game to have a great time playing at Myotha National and you would not want to miss out on the experience.

There are some significant elevation changes on the golf course and the cliffs and canyons provide a dramatic backdrop to a round of golf.  If you have ever played on a desert course, such as those in the United States for example, you will notice similarities between those and Myotha National.  This makes Myotha National a unique golf course in this part of the world.

The course remains dry for much of the year and this makes the playing conditions fast.  Think links golf and you will get some idea of what to expect in terms of roll and bounce.

There are several fantastic holes at Myotha National, which makes it difficult to pick some out as a highlight.  However, the 12th is a standout thanks to the huge tiers on the green and if you get on the wrong level, you have a huge putt to play.  The 16th hole is a par-3 and plays to an island green which has been made from rocks moved from the other holes.

The service at Myotha National is excellent and you will find a roaming beverage cart to keep refreshed during a round and lovely restaurant serving Thai and Burmese dishes when you have finished playing.

If you have been searching for a once in a life time golf trip, the Myotha National is a superb choice.
