Bukit Jawi Golf Resort is a 36-hole layout with two excellent and challenging Championship golf courses spread out over more than 300 acres of undulating countryside, contoured water hazards and lakes interspersed with palm trees.  The pick of the courses in Penang.

Bukit Jawi Golf Resort is not actually on the island of Penang and you need to drive across one of the bridges on the mainland and then head south towards Ipoh.  Depending on traffic conditions and where you are staying it takes around 60-90 minutes to reach the course.  With two courses on offer one of the options is to stay overnight at the course and play a second round before returning to Penang island.

There are two courses here and both are actually quite similar although the Hill Course is recognised as the championship layout. The Hill course is a real test of every aspect of your game with distance, accuracy and course management all required if you are to navigate this course successfully.  The Lakes Course as its name suggests has water on all but a handful of holes and is probably the prettier of the two layouts.

The Hill Course starts with a reasonably easy par-4 which doglegs to the right but any attempt to take on too much and you will end up in the trees and a bogey or worse will be the result.  The second is short par-3 with a large bunker protecting the front of the green and the 3rd is the longish par-4 on the front nine with a green well protected by bunkers.  The 5th is another long par-4 and rated the most difficult not only because of its length but also because of the fairway bunkers and quite a small green with bunkers left and right.  The 9th is a great par-5 which requires you to negotiate two water hazards as you make your way to the green which is surrounded by bunkers.

The back nine at Bukit Jawi Golf Resort is memorable for the two par-3s: The 12th is quite short but has a large pond in front of the green and a bunker left and behind.   The 16th is slightly longer but also has a pond and bunkers protecting the green. The finishing hole is a great par-5 with a large water hazard encroaching into the fairway and bunkers all around the green.

As you start the Lakes Course there is water both sides and if you can avoid that then there are two strategically placed bunkers waiting to swallow your tee shot.  No water on the easy par-3 2nd but the 3rd has a waste hazard which the longer hitters might try to carry and if you play safe then it’s a long way to the green.  The 5th is a short par-4 but is a severe 90 degree dogleg which requires careful shot section as a bunker and water lies in wait for those that over club.  The 6th which is a long par 4 and the most difficult hole on the course has a large pond waiting for your tee shot.

As you reach the turn you need to prepare yourself for several blind tee shots especially on the 10th which has a green surrounded by bunkers so an accurate tee shot is essential. The 12th is a pretty par-3 with water on the left short of the green and a large bunker in front of it.  The 13th is a long par-5 dogleg with no water but plenty of sand around the green.  The 15th is the best hole on either course:  A medium length par-3 teeing off from an elevated position to an island green framed by the mountains in the background.  The 17th has water all the way along the left hand side and the 18th has water directly in front of the tee boxes and another very well-protected green.

The clubhouse facilities and management at Bukit Jawi Golf Resort are excellent and we thoroughly recommend this course.
