Following its redesign by Ernie Els, The Els Club in Langkawi is earning rave reviews with its spectacular scenery, cooling jungle environment, immaculately presented course and very attentive staff.  Some spectacular holes beside the sea.

This is a wonderfully presented course in pristine condition under the management of Troon Golf so you can expect service of the highest standard.  With jungle lining the fairways on most of the holes Ernie has decided that the local flora and fauna is enough of a challenge and has decided not to have any bunkers on the course unless of course you count the beach which runs close to some of the holes!  The problem with this approach is that many of the holes are very similar and it’s only when you get close to the beach that you will play holes that will stick in your memory.  There are few man-made water hazards on the course and the natural stream which meanders through the course and appears, sometimes unexpectedly, is enough to catch you out.

One great feature of the Els Club Teluk Datai in Langkawi and especially because caddies are not always available is that all the buggies are equipped with a sophisticated satellite navigation systems which give you an aerial view of each hole and also gives accurate distances to the greens.

The opening couple of holes are fairly straight forward with reasonably wide landing areas and in common with many holes on this course are gentle doglegs.  The par-3, 3rd is a very pretty hole with the green framed by the jungle – it plays slightly uphill but not too much trouble.  The 4th is a medium length par-4 with some water in play off the green but if you can avoid that then the landing area is generous and the green unobstructed. The 5th is a one hole you definitely will remember as you play directly towards the sea to a green right on the edge of the water and the view from the tee will have you reaching for your camera.  The par-4, 6th takes you back up the hill away from the sea and although it’s quite short the stream runs across the fairway just in front of the green so this approach is not for the faint hearted!  The par-5, 7th is another signature hole with the stream crossing in front of the tee boxes and a fairway which doglegs to the right down to the green right beside the beach  and as you get closer you will feel the effects of any prevailing wind which makes club selection a lottery.  The 8th starts the journey back to the clubhouse and the ever-present stream is much in evidence here as it crosses in front of the tee boxes and snakes up the left side of the fairway.  This hole again doglegs to the left as you approach the green and the creek passes in front of the greens and has created a larger pond to the right hand side of the green.

The opening few holes on the back nine at the Els Club in Langkawi are pretty similar as you zigzag up and down the jungle with some great views of the mountains as you play away from the sea.  The really interesting holes on this nine starts at the short par-3, 15th with water directly in front of the green which slopes gently from back to front.  The 16th is a par-4 which is quite a severe dogleg down to another green close to the beach. The 17th is a very spectacular par-3 right beside the beach with a carry across the beach and rocks all the way to the green – The views from the tee box are spectacular with the sea and islands in the background.  Here you will feel the full force of any wind with no room for error if you take on the pin although for the less able there is a generous bail-out area left of the green.

Very modern clubhouse with restaurant and bar looking over the course down to the sea. If you have time why not sample one of Ernie’s wines!

We thoroughly enjoyed the course

The course has an excellent layout. The greens were in great condition and fast. Directions were clear and the pro shop and hospitality good. Would have liked to have had a caddy but that was a pre booking issue. I’d come back and recommend

Spectacular Setting, and no bunkers!

A great location set in rain forest and beach frontage. Great condition. Many holes are dog legs but in the middle there are two brutal par 5’s both around 550 yards, back to back (7/8). Great clubhouse and food for after game.
