Langkawi is set to become a major golfing destination and now boasts three of the best golf courses in Malaysia and one of the great attractions of playing golf in Langkawi is the fact the courses are virtually empty – especially during the week. Discover golf in Langkawi and its wonderful golf courses before everyone else does.
99 East Golf Club
The 99 East Golf Club is a new golf course in Langkawi with many challenging shots that offer beautiful views and link style holes with rolling forest.
East Golf lies between Pantai Centang and Kuah Town. It’s the first Malaysian course that’s managed by Troon Golf, an American based firm. This man made course has a natural feel to it made up of forests, orchard valleys and wetlands.
You play uphill to the high point on the opening holes, the views here are spectacular. The par-5 6th travels down towards the forest with valleys below. Along the ocean the holes mimic Scottish links with native wild grasses and reeds around the holes. There are some rice terraces around the course, just to remind you you’re not on a British course.
This course provides its share of challenges, from the waving forests to the flat ocean holes, swept by the wind which can give you an average score. But the holes have been well designed and with the breezes and magnificent views, the score doesn’t seem to matter.
Gunung Raya Golf Resort
A good golf course, that’s perhaps not outstanding, but offers good play for high handicappers. It’s hot, so come prepared. Tucked away in the foothills on a former rubber plantation it’s provides an interesting day’s golf.
The Gunung has been designed by the American Max Wexler and it’s an interesting addition to the Langkawi golfing scene. It’s built on a rubber plantation on 300 acres of land.
The first tee is elevated with a dog-leg on the right. There are some excellent views here from this elevated position. The fairways come with Bermuda grass and are wide enough to play comfortably. There aren’t too many hazards, remarkably, but the par-3 7ths over 200 yards is difficult with tiered green with bunkers all around with breezes coming to make things even harder.
There’s more foliage as you go along and the 10th comes with a long par-5 dog-leg and comes with water down the left side. There’s a fairway with its fair share of bunkers, and the ground is quite tough and thick and you could lose your ball easily. The drainage is questionable so there are some soggy parts to avoid. You need to make sure you have water and sunblock as the heat here is phenomenal. The trees are still quite young so don’t really offer any shelter.
This is a good golf course that’s not exceptional but provides a good round of golf. It would be a good idea to come when the weather is cooler so as to make for a more comfortable game.
The Els Club Teluk Datai
The Els Club opened in the early nineties and was voted the most scenic golf course in Malaysia and then nominated as one of the best golf resorts in Asia.
The Els Club Teluk Datai has much to recommend it with two votes as the best scenic golf course in Malaysia and the best golf resort in Asia. If that’s not enough it was also voted Best Top ten Golf Course in Malaysia by Asian Golf Monthly in 2009. During the period 20-12-13 the course was renovated and opened for play this year in 2014.
It’s clearly one of the most unique golf courses in Malaysia. It’s in the northern part of Langkawi with the Andaman Sea and 8,000 acres. It travels through a rainforest that’s at least a million years old, that moves towards the Andaman Sea. Above, we have the peaks of Mat Cincang Mountains. Streams run throughout the golf course and you could lose your concentration if you look into the face of the mountain or lose yourself in the rainforest. The views really are that spectacular.
The golf is excellent not hindered by the fact that the entire reserve is protected. There are many different varieties of trees and plants including tropical hardwoods, broad-leafed plants, palms, parasitic vines and bougainvillea. There’s wildlife too with monkeys and other animals living around the course.
This is a par-72 championship course with nearly 7,000 yards from the tip for both beginners and more experienced players. There’s uphill and downhill play with sloping fairways and undulating greens. The fairways are wide enough for good bunkering. The breath-taking supply of proud trees line the fairways.
The landscape of this course is hilly but flat on the front-nine. The sharp dog-leg par-5 8th is exceptional. There are some more slopes on the back nine. The 15th has an awesome closing stretch with a downhill plunge par-3. The par-4 16th comes with giant trees reaching over to trip your ball as it travels; the signature hole is a 17yard par-3 over the Andaman Sea. Then back uphill with a par-3 followed up with a short par-5 closure.
The course is managed by Troon Golf and comes with excellent service that is of an international standard. The facilities and locker room are exemplary as are the Pro Shop and food and drink. You can hire golf equipment, and golf carts are included in your fees. The green fees are quite expensive but the golf here in Malaysia is of a high standard. If you love nature and you love golf, then this is a match made in heaven and a must visit course.
