Luang Prabang is a city in north central Laos and is part of the province which goes by the same name. The city of Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its well preserved architectural, religious and cultural heritage.
Situated on a peninsula at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong River, Luang Prabang sits below a hill which is adorned with many temples. Mount Phou Si provides great views over the town and provides access to Wat Chom Si shrine.
The total area of Luang Prabang province is 16,875 square kilometres and has been split into 12 districts. One of which is the capital and the others include Xieng Ngeun, Nan, Pak Ou and Nambak to name but a few.
Getting to Luang Prabang for a golf holiday is easier than you may think and involves just one connecting flight. Luang Prabang International Airport is one of only a few international airports in Laos and was recently modernised in 2013.
Sitting to the north-east of the main town, you can catch flights to Luang Prabang from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Jinghong, Pakse, Siem Reap, Kuala Lumpur and Vientiane. Bangkok Airlines, Laos Airlines, Thai Airways and Air Asia are just some of the airlines which fly to Luang Prabang.
Luang Prabang has a tropical wet and dry climate. This means the city remains warm throughout the year, with temperatures rarely dropping below an average of 19 degrees, even in the winter months.
Indeed, December and January are the coolest months of the year but the average low is still at 15 degrees, which remains a pleasant temperature for playing golf.
Luang Prabang has a wet and dry season, which you may want to take into consideration before booking a golf package. The dry season is between November and March, when the temperature is also a little cooler while the wet season falls between April and October.
However, April, May, September and October are good months for playing golf in Luang Prabang as the rain is not as consistent as June, July and August.
You will enjoy some fantastic rounds of golf at Luang Prabang Golf Club but perhaps the top attraction away from the golf course is Kuang Si Waterfalls. If you go early enough in the day, either via taxi or bike rental, you can view the falls from the bottom and make a hike up, behind the waterfall, to the top. Behind the falls you will find hidden pools which are perfect paddling.
Learn about the history of Luang Prabang and Laos at the Royal Palace Museum. The former royal residence only allows visitors to tour the museum without anything on their feet and may be the only time you have the chance to visit a museum barefoot.
The busy night market is a great place to pick up gifts and souvenirs before leaving your Luang Prabang golf holiday. There are many cotton and silk made garments and the vendors are more than happy to bargain with you. If you are hungry, you will also find many stalls selling food and drinks.
