Affordable but run-down 18-hole course with poor conditioning

Located around 45 minutes west of Phnom Penh amidst a serene environment of sugar palm trees, evergreen plants, native flowers, fruit and rocky outcrops, Cambodia Golf & Country Club is a very affordable 18-hole golf course designed by Seiichi Inoue. Although the condition and maintenance of the course doesn't match high standards of the prestige courses in Phnom Penh, it's an enjoyable course with strategic bunker placement and lots of water to contend with, particularly on the exciting back nine.

Established in May 1997, Cambodia Golf and Country Club holds the honour of being the first golf course to open in Cambodia, and despite the average maintenance is still well worth a visit. The flattish front nine is a fairly gentle, with wide fairways encouraging you to open your shoulders off the tee, but there are a lot of bunkers to avoid and the massive greens means that three-putts are all too easy.

The back nine holes are more challenging thanks to more undulating terrain and a lot more water in play, most notably at the 14th, a very pretty par 3 that plays into an island green. The putting surfaces are less generous on the second nine, but while three-putting becomes less likely, reaching the greens in regulation is that little bit harder.

Away from the course, the French country style clubhouse offers a full range of facilities, such as locker rooms, bathrooms, a pro-shop, ballroom, café and restaurant, with the latter a nice place to relax after 18 holes of golf and reflect on the great day enjoyed by all at the Cambodia Golf and Country Club.
