Situated within a few miles of the Thailand-Cambodia border, is Chatrium Golf Resort Soi Dao. The course is ja 4 hour drive from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, 3 hours from Pattaya and 90 minutes away from Trat Airport. Located in the Pong Nam Ron region of Thailand, Chatrium Golf Resort Soi Dao is 45 kilometres from the historic town of Chanthabrui, making this a good place to stay and visit the course, if not staying at the golf course itself.
Established in 1995 and designed by Dennis Griffiths, Chatrium Golf Resort Soi Dao is an 18 hole, par-72 course, playing at 7162 yards. The venue is pleasing to the eye, with lush greenery surrounding the course and the foothills of the majestic Soi Dao Mountains, also adding to the view. When stepping on to the course, it becomes apparent that Griffiths fully embraced the natural terrain of the area, when designing Chatrium Golf Resort Soi Dao.
Despite the fact there are four large reservoirs in the vicinity, the golf course does not feature a great deal of water. There are two small lakes and four small ponds which make up the water hazards on this golf course and the third hole is probably the most significant when it comes to avoiding the drink. It’s a 206 yard, par 3 hole, which carries over a pond, to a green which is protected by a tree on right side and a bunker to the left and rear.
With water hazards being at a premium, bunkers certainly come in to play. They have been placed strategically throughout the course, and with some of the greens being very small, bunkers become a real hazard at Soi Dao Highlands Golf Club.
The majority of this golf course is quite flat, although there are some undulations present on the greens, which can cause putts to break quite significantly. There are a couple of excellent, long par-4 holes, which are a good test of long, accurate driving, such as the 9th and 13th holes. There are also halfway kiosks on the golf course, after the 4th and 12th holes, for those who need to refuel.
Chatrium Golf Resort Soi Dao has a club house and hotel on site, with the club house being well designed and offering nice views of the course. The hotel offers 46 deluxe rooms and with the golf course being a 2-hour drive from both Pattaya and Bangkok, it’s worth booking at least an over-night stay.
Chatrium Golf Resort Soi Dao is definitely worth the trip, especially to escape from the main tourist areas of Thailand. Booking a room at the hotel and having time to play the golf course and take in the lovely surroundings, is the best option here.
