Although Sri Lanka is not known as a golf holiday destination it actually has a very long history dating back to 1895 when the then Colonial Secretary, who was a very keen golfer, persuaded the governor to open a golf club in Colombo. It was originally called Ridgeways but was later renamed Royal Colombo Golf Club.
Sri Lanka boasts four outstanding golf courses which are comparable to many of the courses in other parts of Asia. The courses are spread all over Sri Lanka in Colombo, Kandy, Hambantota and Nuwara Eliya. The elevation and weather conditions in each location are very different and offer a unique playing experience.
As an added bonus you also get the chance to see some of Sri Lanka’s outstanding Cultural and World Heritage sites and other attractions.
The Royal Colombo Golf Club in Sri Lanka, has been at the Forefront of the Sri Lankan golf scene since its inauguration in 1879, receiving the Royal Seal from King George V in 1928.
Measuring 6560-yards from the championship tees the course is not long by modern day standards and has a very classic English parkland feel, presented in superb condition year-round, with ambience to match.
Clubhouse facilities are good with everything you could need for your enjoyment before or after your round.
You can also choose to visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage which is an orphanage, nursery and breeding project for wild Asian elephants
The Victoria Golf Course in Kandy is one of the finest examples of a Donald Steel design and makes the most of its prestigious location next to the Victoria reservoir and stunning natural scenery.
Aesthetically pleasing with an abundance of flowering shrubbery, palm-tree lined fairways and white sand bunkers blend seamlessly together to offer a challenging course that will test the very best golfers.
If you have time you should visit the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy which houses a tooth which once belonged to Buddha
Founded in 1889 the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia. The tradition is clear to see with the colonial style clubhouse sitting proudly overlooking the first tee, 2nd and 18th greens.
As you may expect from a course that was founded by the British is has a distinctive parkland feel. Towering trees line the fairways, creating intimate holes, narrow landing areas and a challenging test for all levels of golfers.
The Shangri-La Golf and Country Club was Sri Lanks first all-purpose golf resort.
Set within incredible surroundings of a coconut plantation and the Indian Ocean, The Shangri-La Golf and Country Club is the perfect location to enjoy the most relaxing of golf holidays.
Designer Robert Wright, an advocate of integrating the local environment into the design of the golf course, has created a harmonious marriage between course and nature.
